The interval has to be short in order to catch rapid presses. The polling is done in two steps: first Controller.poll() makes the controller update its components values, then the new component value is retrieved by Component.getPollData(). To cut down the volume of data, a new value is only displayed if it s different from the previous one. Also, I don t show component releases (i.e., when the user stops pressing a button, the hat, or stick), which would appear as 0s, or values close to 0.0f.

To ensure the integrity of its data, the MyISAM storage engine supports only a single type of locking level: table-level locking. Much has been made of this deficiency, but for many applications, this level of locking, and its specific implementation in the MyISAM storage engine, works quite well and can be effective even in very high concurrency scenarios. MyISAM issues one of three separate types of locks on its resources (data records), depending on the request issued to it by the connecting thread: READ LOCAL: If the thread issues a SELECT statement against the in-memory copy of the data records, MyISAM asks for a READ LOCAL lock on the data. This type of lock does not prevent INSERTs into the table, as long as the data will be appended to the end of the data file. If the INSERT would push data into the middle of the data file, then the INSERT statement would need to wait until the READ LOCAL lock was released by the SELECT statement s thread.

A GLCanvas object is paired with a GLEventListener listener, which responds to changes in the canvas and to drawing requests. When the canvas is first created, GLEventListener s init() method is called; this method can be used to initialize the OpenGL state. Whenever the canvas is resized, including when it s first drawn, GLEventListener s reshape() is executed. It can be overridden to initialize the OpenGL viewport and projection matrix (i.e., how the 3D scene is viewed). reshape() is also invoked if the canvas is moved relative to its parent component. Whenever the canvas display() method is called, the display() method in GLEventListener is executed. Code for rendering the 3D scene should be placed in that method. Aside from the canvas and listener, most games will need a mechanism for triggering regular updates to the canvas. This functionality is available through JOGL s FPSAnimator utility class, which can schedule a call to the canvas display() method with a frequency set by the user. All these elements are shown in Figure 15-1.

NOTE The desktop versions of XNA can take advantage of an application called XACT (which is short for crossplatform audio creation tool), which can organize sound effects for easier playback within a game. XACT is only supported for Windows and Xbox360 XNA games, however, so cannot be used for Windows Phone 7 games.
